Cala - Dead Sea

Sand or Rocks?

From wide, golden-sand beaches to secluded, hidden coves,Argentario beaches for every taste: whether easily accessible or wild anduntouched, they are all surrounded bypristine natureand overlookcrystal-clear waters.

Mar Morto is undoubtedly one of the most popular coves among tourists and a favorite spot for locals, as it offers a view of the striking Isola Rossa in the background—a massive rock that is actually red in color—where boats often seek shelter or go snorkeling, while the small beach itself boasts features that are truly one-of-a-kind.

In fact, it owes its name to the enormous natural pool that Mother Nature has bestowed upon this cove. A massive barrier of rocks shields the sea, naturally creating a large area of crystal-clear water sheltered from all winds, with the water inside always calm—or“dead.”

Another distinctive feature of this beach is the presence of mostly smooth rocks, making it easy to see children hopping from one rock to another with ease.

To reach the Dead Sea by land, you must drive through the industrial area of Porto S. Stefano on Via del Campone until you reach the end of the municipal road in the Maddalena area. From there, proceed with caution, turning left onto a paved road that is narrow and partially unprotected by guardrails for about 4.3 km, until you reach the trail leading to the cove.

The trail, which winds through Mediterranean scrub, has a significant elevation gain, and the beach is about a 15-minute walk from the main road.
