Santa Liberata owes its name to Pope Gregory XI, who, in the second half of the 14th century, was traveling to Rome with the aim of restoring the papal seat to the capital. On his return from Avignon, he encountered a severe storm and found shelter in this very bay, naming it Santa Reparata —a name that eventually evolved into Santa Liberata.
Today, the Santa Liberata Canal serves as a mooring and rental site for small boats and, above all, plays a vital role in the microclimate of the Orbetello Lagoon, as it is one of the four points of entry for saltwater.
The beach is completely free to use and easily accessible on foot; the Porto S. Stefano–Orbetello bus route stops nearby.
