From wide, golden-sand beaches to secluded, hidden coves,Argentario beaches for every taste: whether easily accessible or wild anduntouched, they are all surrounded bypristine natureand overlookcrystal-clear waters.
This section of The Argentario coastal route takes its name from the Torre della Ciana, a fortification of the same name built in the 15th century by the Republic of Siena based on a design by the renowned Francesco di Giorgio Martini. Like other nearby fortifications, it suffered a major pirate raid in 1740 that severely damaged it.
Near the tip, the rock takes on a lighter color, crisscrossed by overlapping horizontal curved lines that tell the story of the tectonic movement that formedArgentario. The true highlight of this stretch of coastline is, in fact, the distinctive color of the red and ochre clay layers of the cliff.
These, bent and twisted by tectonic movement and constantly eroded by the waves, offer a spectacle perhaps surpassed only by the seabed, rich with exposed rocks and clumps of Posidonia, guardians of a vibrant underwater world.
