Curated by Francesca Rosi and Caterina Martinelli
Forte Stella, Porto ErcoleDates: June 6–September 27, 2026
The title of the exhibition evokes three verbs that run through Mauro Staccioli’s entire body of work. To mark, because his works alter our perception of places. To question, because each piece arises from a question posed to the context that hosts it. To traverse, because Staccioli’s sculpture invites the public to experience space both physically and mentally, establishing a direct relationship with its surroundings.
Staccioli’s works are always created in relation to a specific place: they engage withthe architecture, history, landscape, and people. The exhibition finds its ideal setting in Porto Ercole, within the evocative Forte Stella, a 16th-century fortress overlooking the seaArgentario, where the beauty of the landscape blends with the power of the sculptures on display. Forte Stella is not merely a backdrop, but an integral part of the experience: here, the works establish a continuous dialogue with the fortress’s architecture, with the light, and withthe horizon over the sea.
The exhibition follows a chronological progression: from the 1970s—a period marked by intense social and political tensions—to the artist’s later, more mature phases, illustrating the coherence and evolution of a minimalist and instantly recognizable artistic language. Alongside the large-scale sculptures, smaller works and drawings offer insight into the artist’s creative process.

Mauro Staccioli(Volterra, 1937 – Milan, 2018)
An Italian sculptor, he developed “intervention sculptures” made of concrete and iron with a strong political message in the 1970s. Since the 1980s, his forms have become more open and curved, engaging with the landscape. His archive is now overseen by his daughter Giulia and directed by Andrea Alibrandi.
Exhibition organized by the Municipality of Monte Argentario the Argentario & Ambiente Special Agency, with scientific support from the Mauro Staccioli Archive.
