Pirate Night - May

Porto Ercole: A Blend of History and Entertainment

Every spring, Porto Ercole comes alive with "La Notte dei Pirati" (Pirate Night), a spectacular event that blends history, folklore, and fun. With costumed parades, dramatic landings, and an exciting nighttime treasure hunt, the entire village relives the ancient pirate raids in a unique and lively atmosphere.

Every year, usually on the first weekend of May, Porto Ercole comes alive for one of the most anticipated and spectacular events on The Argentario calendar: Pirate Night.

More than just a festival, it is an authentic historical reenactment with a folkloric twist, inspired by the centuries when pirates and privateers plied these waters. An event that combines fun, tradition, and entertainment, attracting thousands of visitors and engaging the entire community.

For one day and one night, the village takes on a whole new look: the boardwalk, the small beaches, bars, restaurants, and clubs are transformed into inns and pirate hideouts, thanks to evocative sets, elaborate costumes, decorations, and choreography that make the atmosphere even more lively and immersive.

The highlight comes at sunset on Saturday, with the grand parade of the pirate crews: hundreds of costumed participants flood the town’s streets in a noisy and colorful procession. As night falls, the scene shifts to the sea: the crews board the traditional “guzzi” boats and stage the famous “pirate landing, a spectacular assault on the beaches amid fireworks, colored smoke, and pyrotechnic explosions.

But the night has only just begun. At the sound of the cannon shot, the highly anticipated nighttime treasure hunt begins: a team game featuring skill challenges, duels, riddles, and disguises, culminating in an epic final showdown to win the key to the chest containing ten silver coins plated in gold —the symbolic treasure of the pirates of Porto Ercole.

Pirate Night is now one of the most beloved and well-known events on the Tuscan coast, with significant benefits in terms of tourism promotion, public participation, and economic value for the region. A unique experience, blending theatrical fantasy with historical roots, it continues to captivate young and old, locals and visitors alike.
