Pozzarello Fort

Between History and Change

From its founding in the 13th century until its conversion into a prison in the 20th century, the Rocca Aldobrandesca has been a symbol of defense, architectural ingenuity, and layers of history.

Forte Pozzarello isthe last major fortification built on Monte Argentario. Its construction dates backto the unification of Italy, after Rome had become the new capital of the Kingdom and military experts of the time believed that its defense should begin at the Gulf of San Stefano-Talamone, an ideal location for a potential enemy landing.

Construction work on this imposing fortification began in 1881 and continued until 1888, when it was finally completed and armed. The cost of the project was over 5 million lire.

The fort is located at an elevation of approximately 190 meters above sea level, facing the cove of the same name on the northern coast of Argentario. Its design reflectsthe typical architecture of Piedmontese fortifications of the period. With a rather complex trapezoidal floor plan andinternal layout, it extends primarily underground across three different levels and occupies the entire summit of the hill of the same name. It covers an area of approximately 8,000 square meters and includes 18 rooms for the garrison and others used for storage. It was defended by a wide, deep dry moat, withaccess provided by an iron drawbridge.

Designed to defend against attacks from the sea, the fort became obsolete with the riseof aviation, so after World War I it was first converted into a coastal battery and then into an ammunition depot. Following this latter use, it was equipped internally with long rail tracks to make the transport of the delicate and dangerous material easier and safer.
Forte Pozzarello remained in operation until 1975 and has been abandoned ever since.

How to get there: Invisible from both the sea and the coastal road leading to Porto S. Stefano, the fort can be reached after passing Cala del Pozzarello, by followingthe former military road that climbs from Poggio Calvello to the top of the hill where the structure stands.

Directions to the point of interest

The Pozzarello Fort is situated in a scenic location, atop a hill overlooking the sea, a short distance from Porto Santo Stefano. To reach it, follow a footpath that starts from the provincial road (SP161), near the village of Pozzarello. The path is a gently sloping dirt trail that winds through Mediterranean vegetation and passes through several tunnels from the old railway line.

The path is pleasant for those who enjoy walking, but it is not suitable for wheelchairs or people with mobility issues: the surface is dirt and stone, with uneven sections and slight elevation changes. To reach the fort, you must pass through an arched gate in the walls; there are no ramps or alternative accessible routes.

The building is largely underground, and the interior includes tunnels, storage areas, and military walkways that are accessible only on foot. There are no elevators, handrails, or tactile paving, and lighting may be poor. Outside, visitors must also navigate uneven or sloped terrain.

For these reasons, this tour is recommended only for people who are physically able to walk on their own. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing someone along if you have even mild difficulty walking.

Despite the obstacles, the path leading to the fort offers a breathtaking view of the Orbetello lagoon and The Argentario coast, providing an immersive experience in nature and history.
