Route Description

This fascinating urban and nature hike begins on Via Spaccabellezze, near the ticket offices for Isola del Giglio. The trail starts with a section that passes above the cemetery, then plunges into a surprising setting: a sort of small natural canyon, shaped by time and the elements, which immediately creates a unique atmosphere.

After walking for about 25–30 minutes, you’ll reach a crossroads. Continue straight ahead, tackling an uphill stretch that leads to the highest point of the route, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the inland area and the sea.

At the fork where there is a sign on the left pointing to “Ronconali,” take the road downhill to the right instead, which leads back toward the historic center of town, until you find yourself right in front of the Spanish Fortress, one of the most iconic landmarks of Porto Santo Stefano.

The descent continues along Via del Forte. Keeping the fortress on your right, you pass the Church of Santo Stefano and finally arrive at the town’s main square, enlivened by the quaint little harbor and the picturesque Pilarella pier.

This route takes you through the four historic districts of Porto Santo Stefano— Croce, Fortezza, Pilarella, and Valle —which compete against one another every August 15 in the traditional and thrilling Palio MarinaroArgentario, set against the stunning backdrop of the Stadio del Turchese. An experience that blends nature, history, and local tradition, making this hike a journey rich in emotion and meaning.
